It seemed to Emily that it all began one bright spring day, a day meant for adven-ture. The weather was so warm Mama had let her take off her long stockings and put on her half socks for the first time since last fall. Breezes on her knees after a winter of stockings always made Emily feel as frisky as a spring lamb. The field that Emily could 1 see from the kitchen window had turned blue with wild forget-me-nots and down in the pasture the trees, black silhouettes trimmed with abandoned bird nests through- out the soggy winter, were suddenly turning green. Everywhere sap was rising, and Emily felt as if it was rising in her, too. This made it difficult for her to sit still long enough to write to her cousin Muriel, who lived in Portland and had so many wonderful thingsthings like f leece-lined bedroom slippers with kittens on the toes, cement side-walks to roller-skate on, and a public library full of books. Finish your letter, Emily, said Mama, who was scrubbing out milk pans at the kitchen sink while the washing machine churned away on the back porch. Then you can take it to the post office. Emily looked up from her letter. Mama, 2 I just know something wonderful is going to happen today, she said. I can feel it in my bones. Mama laughed. Adventure is pretty scarce here in Pitchfork. I think your imagi-nation is running away with you. Mama often said this and whenever she did, Emily c

Today Im going to meet a boy. If she thought it often enough as if she really believed it, maybe she actually would meet a boy even though she was headed for Sandra Nortons house and the worst babysitting job in Wood-mont. If I dont step on any cracks in the sidewalk all the way there, Jane thought, Ill be sure to meet a boy. But avoiding cracks was silly, of course, and the sort of thing she had done when she was in the third grade. She was being just as silly as some of the other fifteen-year-old girls she knew, who 1 counted red convertibles and believed they would go steady with the first boy they saw after the hun-dredth red convertible. Counting convertibles and not stepping on cracks were no way to meet a boy. Maybe, when she finished her job with Sandra, she could walk down to Nibleys Confectionery and Soda Fountain and sit at the counter and order a chocolate Coke float; and if she sipped it very, very slowly, a new boy might happen to come in and sit down beside her. He would be at least s

①他的嘴唇干得裂了______________,脸上挂满__________,深陷在黑色眼眶里的两只眼睛布满了__________。 ②他的脸____________________,嘴唇干得__________。 这样写是为了表现战士们虽然急需苹果,但他们心中却________________________

- 1 -The Mystery Knight A Tale of the Seven KingdomsA light summer rain was falling as Dunk and Egg took their leave of Stoney Sept. Dunk rode his old war horse Thunder, with Egg beside him on the spirited young palfrey he'd named Rain, leading their mule Maester. On Maester's back were bundled Dunk's armor and Egg's books, their bedrolls, tent, and clothing, several slabs of hard salt beef, half a flagon of mead, and two skins of water. Egg's old straw hat, wide-brimmed and floppy, kept the rain off the mule's head. The boy had cut holes for Maester's ears. Egg's new straw hat was on his own head. Except for the ear holes, the two hats looked much the same to Dunk. As they neared the town gates, Egg reined up sharply. Up above the gateway, a traitor's head had been impaled upon an iron spike. It was fresh from the look of it, the flesh more pink than green, but the carrion crows had already gone to work on it. The dead man's lips and cheeks were torn and ragged; his eyes were two brown holes weeping slow red tears as raindrops mingled with the crusted blood. The dead man's mouth sagged open, as if to harangue travelers passing through the gate below. Dunk had seen such sights before. "Back in King's Landing when I was a boy, I stole a head right off its spike once," he told Egg. Actually it had been Ferret who scampered up the wall to snatch the head, after Rafe and Pudding said he'd never dare, but when the guards came running he'd tossed it down, and Dunk was the one who'd caught it. "Some rebel lord or robber knight, it was. Or maybe just a common murderer. A head's a head. They all look the same after a few days on a spike." Him and his three friends had used the head to terrorize the girls of Flea Bottom. They'd chase them through the alleys and make them give the head a kiss before they'd let them go. That head got kissed a lot, as he recalled. There wasn't a girl in King's Landing who could run as fast as Rafe. Egg was better off not hearing that part, t

The clock had struck eight already, and then eight thirty. Ralph was the only mouse in the Mountain View Inn, a run-down hotel in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, who 1owned a motorcycle. It was a mouse-sized red motorcycle, a present from a boy named Keith who had been a guest in Room 215 over the Fourth of July weekend. Ralph was proud of his motorcycle, but his brothers and sisters said he was selfish. I am not, said Ralph. Keith gave the motorcycle to me. That evening, while Ralph waited under the clock and watched the television set across the lobby, a man and a woman fol-lowed by a medium-sized boy walked into the hotel. They had the rumpled look of people who had driven many miles that day. The boy was wearing jeans, cowboy boots, and a white T-shirt with the words Happy Acres Camp stenciled across the front. Ralph observed the boy with interest. He was the right kind of boy, a boy sure to like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Since the day Keith had left the hotel, Ralph had 2longed for crumbs of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. A grating, grinding noise came from the works of the grandfather clock. Ralph clapped his paws over his ears. The clock 3 grumbled and groaned and managed to strike the hour. Nine oclock! The time almost had come.The stroke of nine was fol-lowed by the slow sad notes of music that lingered and died mysteriously in the dis-tance every ni
